One day, like my father, I dream to become “a daddy long legs” of my own. It took a living example of my dad, what he does on day-to-day basis and a letter from the heart of a grateful beneficiary which made me realize that the key to being happy is to make others happy in a way that fits your vision of a brighter future for humanity. It did not take a catastrophe or an earthshaking event to make me realize what life is all about. I obtained positions of authority and exercised leadership by winning the elections to be my grade-school representative so I can have the influence to improve the welfare of my colleagues and community. But I have something that other students would be inspired to have – a sense of responsibility not only to do well for myself but also to help others do well for themselves. I may not have a 4.0 GPA or a perfect entrance test score that nowadays are accepted indicators of a successful student. And finally, I helped develop real-life math problems and worksheets and booklets with the math department. I found my feet sore from scouting and mapping a new jogging path, coordinating with the school’s physical education department to promote fundamental warm up routines that they once lacked. Just like my father, I later found myself participating in conferences with the science department, improving their criteria for evaluation purposes, illustrating model lab reports and teaching methods that promoted critical thinking and individual analysis within his school. I translated his philosophies into my involvement helping underprivileged kids in SBP (Samahang Bukas Palad) and Child Hope, building homes for habitat for humanity, volunteering to clean up the polluted Pasig river, and becoming more involved with my father’s school – meeting the very scholars who wrote my father these letters. He used his position of responsibility as the owner of a school in an impoverished community to help others build and realize their dreams and, as a result, shaped my dreams as well. My father gave scholarships to people who needed it the most. Originally written for my father, this letter made a difference in my life as a child and motivated me to pursue what my father had been doing for so many years. In an environment filled with poverty that hinders peoples’ hopes and dreams, I found this letter to be truly remarkable. I wish I can help this institution someday. The eyes of a person having a clean heart. I saw you walking in our school and I saw your eyes. Sir, you gained our respect not because of your position, it’s because of who you are. Same as the guy in that story, you have the kind heart & attitude. Why I am saying this to you? It’s because for me, you are the “Daddy Long Legs” of Gallegans. I hope you will have a chance to watch that. That’s the reason why she called him “Daddy Long Legs”. What she saw is the shadow of that guy, a shadow wearing a cap and having long legs. She did not have any idea who was that man who granted her scholarship. She came from “Ampunan” and (granted) received scholarship from a charitable man. During my childhood days I had watched a cartoon series entitled “My Daddy Long Legs.” The main character in that series was a bright girl named Judy Abbot. This letter continues to inspire me and motivates my passion to be involved and do the right thing. The following letter was addressed to my father, the President of the Manuel V.
